גָּאוֹן ga'on "pride" most frequently found in the prophets, often used positively of God's "majesty", but also negatively of human "arrogance", particularly of nations. Used in Amos at 6:8 & 8:7.

The "pride of" a land may refer to the capital or major city (Ps 47:4; Is 13:19; Jer 13:9; Ez 32:12; Zech 9:6; 10:11 but cf. Is 16:6; Jer 48:29; Hos 5:5; 7:10; Nah 2:3).

In Am 6:8 the phrase "the pride of Jacob" there may even be a play on this, though this can hardly be argued in 8:7!
