Exodus chapters 21-23 are called the Covenant Code on the basis of Ex
24:7. This collection is widely regarded as the oldest in the Pentateuch.
It begins with casuistic laws,
common to all Ancient Near -Eastern "law codes' but ends with apodictic
material.
