Hebrew verbs are modified in a way in which English verbs are not. There are several forms which a verb can take, these are given names taken from their sound in a paradigm verb: qal, niphal, hiphil, piel, pual, hithpael... Often the change of meaning between binyan follows a regular pattern, as in the diagram. However, often the relationship between two binyan of the same root is not this simple!
