(i) Verse, or short saying, that is not part of a work but standing before it as a kind of entry point. In modern works these are usually printed with the other introductory material, often just before the title page (cf. Am 1:2).

(ii) Writing related to the Bible, but not part of the biblical corpus, eg. Ancient Near Eastern texts discovered in Palestine, such as the Gezer Calendar.
