Gaza occupied a strategic position on the trade route and was well supplied by wells, so it was a rich city and is often mentioned in Assyrian accounts of punitive expeditions in the region. The kings of Gaza seem to have been skillful in cooperating with the dominant powers in turn and were rewarded on more than one occasion by grants of land.
