The name גַּלְעֵד Gilead seems to be shared in the Bible by several people and places.

In Hosea the name may refer to a city (Hos 6:8; 12:11) near Mizpah also mentioned in Jdg 10:17.

Elsewhere the name (whether used of people or place) is associated with the Transjordan, the area referred to is south of Bashan, and cut in two by the Jabbok.

Because of its lush forests Gilead (גַּלְעֵד or often as in Am 1:3 הַגִּלְעָד the Gilead) is linked with Carmel or Lebanon as a picture of fertility. The balm of Gilead was proverbial.
