diaspora

From the Greek for scattering (as seeds used to be scattered in a field) διασπορά diaspora describes communities of particular racial or cultural orignins living outside their traditional homeland. Originally it referred to colonists, but through it's application to Jewish communities "dispersed" as a result of imperialism it now more often refers to the dispersed colonised.
