Priestly strand (P)
Among the strands that source critics commonly find in the Pentateuch one seems to focus on the concerns and interests of the priests. It preserves lists and genealogies, and detailed descriptions of the tabernacle equipment and furnishings. It has a drier and less dramatic narrative style than the "Yahwist", but seeks to respect God's majesty. Genesis chapters 1 and 5 are not untypical. Compare the genealogy in ch. 5 with that in ch.4 (which is a Yahwist rendering of similar material).
