laqat "gather, glean" although the word seems
primarily to mean "gather" and is used of both
useful objects (stones in Gen 31:4),
food (Ex 16:4) and even
people or animals (Jdgs 11:3),
it comes to refer particularly to the rule that when harvesting dropped
grain or fruit should be left for the poor (Lev 19:9-10) this leads to
the appropriate translation "glean" (an old word for gathering
small quantities) in several passages. Since "glean" has few other
uses in contemporary English this gives the impression of a technical term.
