Something or someone that shares divine qualities, and therefore is different and other, provoking awe. Set apart for God. In the Bible holiness carries both awesome and ethical elements. Biblical holiness implies right behavior. (Cf. pure and sacred.)

The special clothes worn by the orthodox Jew (in John McMath's photo) at the "Western Wall" expresses a desire to demonstrate holiness by being "set apart".
