a theme or motif which has become traditional. Certain topoi are only at the level of the expression of a text, but others structure a whole scene (cf. the meeting of girl and man at a well leading to a betrothal (e.g. Gen 24:1ff.; 29:1ff.; Ex 2:15-21).
